To convert mechanical power into hydraulic energy, hydraulic pumps are used. These are necessary for the smooth working of the hydraulic systems. These pumps push and move the hydraulic fluid through the system. You can check the Alfa heating pumps to avoid them from getting too hot. These systems can overheat easily. The systems that will experience this too often will fail eventually. Keeping a check on your hydraulic system is a must.

Why are the hydraulic pumps getting hot?

It is easy for the hydraulic pumps to get hot and there can be many causes of the same. Overheating, though, can be the reason for your system failing so keeping a check on the same is necessary. Below are some reasons why your hydraulic pumps are getting hot.

  • The hydraulic fluid is thicker than it is supposed to be. Due to this, the heating circulation pump will heat and the liquid becomes thinner which will, in turn, make the system fail.
  • The hydraulic fluid is contaminated with impurities that will cause the heat to build up and for the pressure to drop.
  • The oil starvation which is having low fluid levels can also lead the hydraulic pumps to get hot.
  • The time period since the hydraulic pumps are in use also affects the internal leakage and reduces the efficiency of the pump.
  • The blocked or damaged heat exchanger can lead to overheating of these pumps as it is important to keep the pumps cool. If it is damaged, it will not e able to remove the heat and keep the pump cool.

What will happen if the hydraulic pumps overheat?

Many things can go wrong if the hydraulic pumps overheat. It can damage the hydraulic system and do some irreversible damage or fail completely. Here are some of the other things that can happen if the hydraulic pumps overheat.

  • If the pumps overheat for too long, it will lead the pump to fail. Once it begins to fail, the whole system will collapse with it.
  • If the hydraulic fluids get to high temperatures, they become thin and lose their viscosity.
  • If the hydraulic fluids are too thin, they can more likely, leak and will not be able to lubricate the pump properly.
  • The pump seals can further be damaged due to extreme hot fluids.
  • If the hydraulic fluids thicken and oxidize, they can restrict the flow of those fluids to the entire system and lead the system to be much more heated.

How to avoid heating the hydraulic pumps?

One of the most common reasons for overheating of the pumps is not having an eye for it along with many other reasons. Below are some of the ways that you could avoid some irreversible changes or permanent damage that overheated hydraulic pumps can do to your system.

  • If you find your pumps heating early in the game, you can catch it and understand the cause of the issue and repair the problem. In that way, it will go back to its ideal temperature again.
  • If the fluids are contaminated and that is the reason for overheating, remove all the contaminants from the existing fluid or remove the entire fluid and add fresh fluid.
  • If you find any leaks due to the seals and fittings, call an expert and let them repair and replace the fittings. Also, keep an eye out for the heat exchanger and check for any damage there.
  • If you don't check the system’s reservoir fluid level regularly then now is the time to start.
