Description
There are three common methods for cooling water-cooled marine petrol and diesel engines: direct seawater cooling, heat exchanger cooling, and keel cooling. Direct cooling of the cylinders and heads with seawater can be unsatisfactory because engines originally designed for radiator cooling may run too cold, while prolonged seawater exposure can damage the cylinder block and heads. Keel cooling is suitable for some small boats, particularly those operating in shallow or weedy water, but external pipework can be a limitation. Marine heat exchanger cooling is one of the most common methods, with seawater isolated within components designed to withstand its corrosive effects.
Alfa Marine Heat Exchangers feature a distinctive spiral corrugated tube design and compact shell & tube construction for effective heat transfer at high fluid velocities and low pressure drops. The tube stack is fully floating, helping minimize thermal stresses, and can be removed for cleaning when necessary.
Marine heat exchangers are available in 316L stainless steel and titanium, both offering high corrosion resistance for seawater applications. Some smaller units are fitted with neoprene end covers that can connect directly to seawater pipework.
